Everyday conversation

Ways to talk that lower stress for both of you.

How to talk together

  1. Step 1. Go to them, make eye contact, and say their name.
  2. Step 2. Speak slowly and clearly, in a calm voice.
  3. Step 3. Use short, simple sentences. Say one thing at a time.
  4. Step 4. Ask yes or no questions. “Would you like some tea?” works better than “What would you like to drink?”
  5. Step 5. Give them time to answer. Try not to interrupt.
  6. Step 6. If they do not understand, try different words instead of repeating the same ones.
  7. Step 7. Talk in a quiet place with few distractions.

Your tone matters

  • Be aware of your tone, face and body language. Try to look relaxed and warm.
  • Be patient and try not to show frustration.

Please avoid

  • Arguing or correcting them.
  • Talking about them as if they are not in the room.
  • Baby talk or a baby voice.
