If someone is missing right now
Start looking right away, beginning close to home. If you do not find them within 15 minutes, call 911 and say the person has dementia.
What is happening
Wandering is when a person walks away without a clear purpose, or keeps trying to “go home” when they are already home. It can be dangerous, because they can get lost or hurt.
Signs it may happen
- Coming back late from walks or drives
- Forgetting the way to familiar places
- Saying they want to “go home” when they are home
- Pacing, restlessness, or trouble finding the bathroom or bedroom
- Seeming lost in a new or changed place
If they go missing
- Step 1. Start looking right away. Check close to home first.
- Step 2. If they are not found within 15 minutes, call 911.
- Step 3. Tell the operator that the person has dementia.
- Step 4. Give the police a recent, close-up photo.
Getting ready ahead of time
- Keep a recent, close-up photo of them where you can find it fast.
- Put bells above doors, or use a door monitor that signals when a door opens.
- Make sure they carry ID, or wear a bracelet with their name and your phone number.
- Ask about a wandering response service in your area.
